Scream Franchise Explained: Sidney Prescott story

With Scream 5 coming next week to theaters is normal wanting to do a marathon of the franchise so we can remember everything that has happened. But, since not everyone has the time for that I wanted to do a quick and simple recap of what has happened on the previous films. Obviously this post includes mayor spoilers of the franchise so proceed with caution.

Before the first film

A series of events that took place on the 70s are the main reason for the Ghostface killing spree on Woodsboro. Maureen Prescott, also known as Rina Reynolds, went to Hollywood without telling anyone. Under her stage name she appeared on three films and three plays.

She was gang raped by several men, and as a result she got pregnant. Giving birth to a boy she left him for adoption and returned to Woodsboro. She settles down and gets married with Neil Prescott and had a daughter, Sidney Prescott. But even after this she started an affair with Cotton Weary and Hank Loomis, the father of her daughter’s boyfriend.

Her past followed her and now her son, called Roman Bridger, wants to meet his mom but is rejected by her. Because of this he started to stalking her eventually finding out of her affairs. He tells to Billy Loomis, Sidney’s boyfriend, about it and claims to him that Maureen is the reason why his mother left.

With the help of his best friend, Stu Matcher, Billy kills Maureen in 1995 framing Cotton Weary.

A year after the murder of her mother, a teenage girl is terrorized by a new killer, who targets the girl and her friends by using horror films as part of a deadly game.

Official plot

In 1996, with just days of being one year of the death of Maureen Prescott, Ghostface starts his killing spree. While the people believe that Cotton raped and killed Maureen a reporter, Gale Weathers, believes that he’s innocent. Sidney’s eventually finds the truth: the rumors about her mother were true, Cotton was innocent, and Ghostface was her boyfriend Loomis and his best friend Stu. Both of them die at hands of Sidney in self defense.

Two years after the first series of murders, as Sidney acclimates to college life, someone donning the Ghostface costume begins a new string of killings.

Official plot

Two years later Sidney is in college but Ghostface is far from being done with trying to kill her. Here’s revealed that the ones behind the mask are Mickey Altieri, a film student in the same college as Sidney, who meet Debbie Salt online. Debbie is no other than Billy’s mother and the second Ghostface. She wanted Sidney dead as she blamed her mother for her marriage failure.

While Sidney and her friends visit the Hollywood set of Stab 3, the third film based on the Woodsboro murders, another Ghostface killer rises to terrorize them.

Official plot

Many questions of Maureen past are answered but Sidney is still being haunted by Ghostface. The person behind it was Roman Bridger, Maureen’s son. This film is the one that reveals the truth about her and the existence of Roman, serving both as a trilogy and prequel.

Ten years have passed, and Sidney Prescott, who has put herself back together thanks in part to her writing, is visited by the Ghostface Killer.

Official plot

Sidney decides to return to Woodsboro for the 10th anniversary of the Ghostface killing spree but he returned as well. Being framed by the latest deaths in town Sidney is forced to stay with her aunt Kate Roberts and her cousin Jill Roberts. By the end of the film is revealed that Jill next to her boyfriend Charles Walker were Ghostface and wanted to become “the new Sidney”. They only wanted the fame of being a survivor of Ghostface. Jill kills Charles to frame him as the only killer but Sidney eventually kills Jill.

Twenty-five years after the original series of murders in Woodsboro, a new killer emerges, and Sidney Prescott must return to uncover the truth.

Official plot

Ghostface is back once again but in only one more week we will know why. And remember, is always someone you know.
