Night’s End (2022) – Shudder original spoiler free review
This low-budget horror movie brings a similar concept like Host (2020) were everything happens throughout a Zoom call. On this case, the protagonist is between Zoom calls with his friends and recording YouTube videos. The film tries to combine technology with a haunted house, but it doesn’t work.
An anxious shut-in moves into a haunted apartment, hiring a stranger to perform an exorcism which quickly takes a horrific turn.
Official plot
Directed by Jennifer Reeder the film starts Geno Walker, Isaac Dees, Kate Arrington, Daniel Kyri, and Theo Germaine. The film had a premiere on the FrightFest Glasgow on March 10, 2022 and arrived to the horror streaming service Shudder on March 31, 2022.
My opinion
The protagonist, Ken Barber, is living alone on an old building after having personal issues that pushed him to move to a new city. Throughout the beginning of the film is clear that his mental state is not as stable as he’s trying to portray to his friends. He’s also the only person living on the building and refuses to leave and find a job. He records YouTube videos of different topics with the hope that he can make money from it.
Of course, things take a paranormal twist when he starts to suspect about the apartment being haunted. He even agrees to an exorcism to be perform online by an occultist couple. Obviously things doesn’t end well.
The film tries to combine to extremely different horror concept and doesn’t succeeds on it. Films like Unfriended (2014) and Host (2020) had a way better success with combining technology with ghosts. It’s a low budget film, but that is not an excuse to be a bad movie. Has a good start with an awful ending.
