Say her name three times in front of a mirror only if you dare. The Bloody Mary urban legend is indeed one of the most popular ones to date. This is way there’s no surprise in seeing her addition into the American Horror Story universe. But instead of being an actual scary episode it became a flat and rushed one. My opinion
During the promotion of American Horror Story: Double Feature last year Ryan Murphy posted on his Instagram stories polls for fans to vote for future teams on the series. Bloody Mary was one of them even being the last option standing against Sirens. While Sirens were promised on season 10, and they didn’t actually appear, Bloody Mary was left on the shadows waiting for it moment to shine. That moment came on August 18, 2022 being the center of the fifth episode of the second season of the spin off series American Horror Stories.
Sadly, the chance of seeing this urban legend come to life in the American Horror Story universe didn’t compensate the long wait. The episode had the essence of the legend, calling her on a mirror and she appearing, but that’s it. Her origin and what she does once is summoned was changed to fit the plot. There’s always a space for change but that’s not the problem with this episode. It felt rushed making it feel like a 20 minutes episode instead of 40 giving little time to actually connect to any character. Also, the CGI used for bloody mary looked more like a snapchat filter. This is an episode that had a lot of potential but it was thrown to waste.
