A young woman inherits a run-down pub and discovers a dark secret within its basement – Baghead – a shape-shifting creature that will let you speak to lost loved ones, but not without consequence.

Film synopsis

The cast includes Freya Allan, Jeremy Irvine, Ruby Barker, Peter Mullan, Anne Müller, Svenja Jung, Ned Dennehy, Julika Jenkins, Saffron Burrows, and Felix Römer.

My opinion

Freya Allan as Iris. ©2024. Baghead. Shudder.

Iris inherits a restaurant in Berlin from her deceased father Owen, where she discovers a creature called “Baghead” in the basement. Baghead can take the form of the deceased for two minutes, but breaking the rule results in bloody consequences. Iris learns from a video message that Baghead must not leave the basement to avoid harming others. But when a client is willing to break the rules, Iris’s life begins to be in danger.

Having similarities with Talk to Me (2023),and based on a short film of the same name by Corredor, Baghead turns into the poorly executed version of it. Despite its promising start, the film unfortunately falls short on maintaining the attention of the viewer throughout its duration. The plot becomes overcomplicated in an attempt to prolong a story that lacks substance and struggles to deliver a compelling narrative. The initial intrigue quickly dissipates, leaving the audience with a sense of disappointment as the film fails to live up to its potential.
