Best Horror Movies of Each Decade: 100 Years of Horror

Horror movies has been with us for a very long time. But over the years some of them had become the best of their decades. Here’s my personal list of the best horror movies of the last 100 years!

1910s: Frankenstein (1910)

Frankenstein, a young student, is seen bidding his sweetheart and father goodbye, as he is leaving home to enter a college in order to study the sciences. Shortly after his arrival at college he becomes absorbed in the mysteries of life and death to the extent of forgetting practically everything else. His great ambition is to create a human being, and finally one night his dream is realized.

1920s: Nosferatu (1922)

A real estate broker needs to sell a castle owned by the eccentric Count Graf Orlock. The count, in fact, is an ancient vampire who spreads terror in the Bremen region, and is interested in Ellen, Hutter’s wife.

The sculptor Henry Jarrod is an artist who produces fantastic wax figures, and is terrified by his colleague Mateo who plans to start a fire in the wax museum where they work, in order to receive the money of the insurance company’s reward.

1960s: Psycho (1960)

The secretary of a real estate company, Marion Crane, cannot marry her lover, Sam Loomis. Fate puts in his hands 40,000 dollars in cash that his boss entrusts to him to deposit in the bank. Marion decides to seize that sum to start a new life with Sam. On the way to California, night falls and a strong storm forces him to look for accommodation in a lonely road motel run by a shy, strange and somewhat insane young man, Norman Bates, and his mother.

1970s: The Exorcist (1973)

Adaptation of William Peter Blatty’s novel. Inspired by a real exorcism that occurred in Washington in 1949. Regan, a twelve-year-old girl, is a victim of paranormal phenomena. Her mother, terrified, after subjecting her daughter to multiple medical tests that do not offer any results, goes to a priest with psychiatric studies. He is convinced that the girl is the victim of diabolical possession. Therefore, with the help of another priest, he decides to practice an exorcism.

1980s: The Shining (1980)

Jack Torrance becomes a winter caretaker at the Overlook Hotel, Colorado, hoping to overcome his blockage with writing. He settles there along with his wife, Wendy, and his son, Danny, who is plagued by psychic premonitions. While Jack’s writing does not flow and Danny’s visions become more worrying, Jack discovers dark secrets of the hotel and begins to become a murderous maniac, determined to terrorize his family.

2010s: Raw (2016)

Justine is a young woman who has grown up in a family where they are all vegetarians and veterinarians. Upon entering veterinary school, the young woman sees how everyone breaks up and discovers another decadent and seductive reality. Obsessed with fitting in among her classmates, she moves away from her principles and eats raw meat for the first time. The consequences of this act come soon, and the young woman will discover her true nature: carnivorous and cannibalistic.
