DASHCAM (2022) spoiler free review
From the creators of Host (2020), which is considered by science one of the scariest horror film ever made, a new horror has arrived. Just like it predecessor DASHCAM takes place during the 2020 pandemic and quarantine. But unlike to Host (2020) this film didn’t had the same good reception.
At the start of the pandemic, an indulgent and self-deluded live streaming improv musician abandons L.A. for London, steals her ex-band mate’s car, and makes the wrong decision to give a ride to an elderly woman who is not what she seems.
Official plot
Directed by Rob Savage and produced by Jason Blum under the Blumhouse Productions label. It had its world premiere on the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival on September 13, 2021. It was officially released on the United States on June 3, 2022.
My opinion
After the success of Host (2020) during the pandemic you will think that having a film similar to it made by the same director could have the same success and good critics from the audience. But Dashcam is not that case. Dashcam it’s a film that happens completely on a livestream filmed in a phone and a car’s dashcam. It has good horror elements and special-effects creating an effective atmosphere and sense of realism to a certain extent.
The biggest fail of the film revolves around the center of the plot: the main character. Annie Hardy, portrayed by Annie Hardy, is an internet personality with right wing strong political opinions. This makes the character extremely annoying to the point that takes away from the film. There’s nothing wrong with a character expressing a political opinion but the problem comes when it becomes pointless and over the top. The only reason to make the character this way is only to justify her actions to a certain extent. But still, is unnecessary to the rest of the film.
While the film is not excellent it had the potential to be an actual good film but sadly the main character takes away too much ruining the experience of the viewer. Dashcam is available to stream on VOD.
