Rating: 4 out of 5.

For a Internet personality loosing sponsors and followers can be their biggest fear. That can lead to make them do anything to get them back, even if it means spending the night alone in a haunted house. Directed by Vanessa and Joseph Winter the American found footage supernatural horror comedy Deadstream follows exactly that. It was released on October 6, 2022 on the horror streaming platform Shudder.

A disgraced internet personality attempts to win back his followers by livestreaming one night alone in a haunted house. But when he accidentally pisses off a vengeful spirit, his big comeback event becomes a real-time fight for his life.

Film synopsis

The cast includes Joseph Winter as Shawn Ruddy, Melanie Stone as Chrissy / Mildred, Jason K Wixom as Corner Man / Cop Corpse, and Vanessa Winter as Mother of Baby Moses.

My opinion

Found footage horror movies are a hit or a miss. It’s needed a certain amount of realism but practical effects at well, a good main character and a interesting enough story. Deadstream has all those four elements becoming an enjoyable horror movie.

The found footage elements are immersive and they simulate a YouTube live stream making the viewer feel that they’re watching a real live stream. This Shudder original is one that you don’t want to miss if this your type of horror.

Deadstream has similarities with the 2020 American satirical horror film Spree. Both films feature a male protagonist obsessed with social media fame. The difference lies in that while Spree protagonist wants to become famous Deadstream protagonist is already famous but is trying to win back subscribers. On a personal opinion, Deadstream executed better the concept.
