Mad God (2022) spoiler free review

Rating: 5 out of 5.

30 years in the making Phill Tippett’s latest film proves once again why he’s one of the best on the stop-motion and creature designing field. You may not recognize his name but you will recognize his work. He was in charge of the visual effects of films like Jurassic Park (1993), Return of the Jedi (1983), RoboCop (1987), The Haunting (1999), and more. Tippett worked on Mad God as the director, producer, writer, cinematographer, production designer, and visual effects supervisor.

A figure known as “The Assasin” as descends from the heavens into a nightmarish pit full of monsters, titans and cruelty.

Official plot

The reason behind that this film took 30 years to be completed is because Tippett started working on it while working on RoboCop 2 (1990) but felt discouraged after working on Jurassic Park (1993). He felt the stop motion technique and films will not longer be popular. 20 years later, with the encouragement of his studio members, Tippett decided to complete the project. Mad God premiered in 2021 at the 74th Locarno Film Festival with Shudder acquiring the distribution rights to the film being released on the streaming service on June 16, 2022.

My opinion

Stop motion film require hard work and patience. Mad God is a visually stunning stop motion film that explodes the full potential of this visual effect technique. The film has little to no dialogue having only sounds and monosyllables relaying completely on the visuals to tell the story. As the audience you will be able to fully understand the film and catch the metaphors and hidden meaning of some scenes. The usage of music perfectly fits the scenes and the atmosphere of the film.

The most impressive part of the film is the attention to the details. The crew behind this project didn’t miss a detail. Every puppet and set is created so meticulously that the human characters can be taken as puppets as well. It may feel a bit overwhelming since is pure visuals but is indeed one of the best horror films of 2022. You’ll be surprised by the amount of gore for being a stop motion film. Don’t miss the chance to enjoy this masterpiece that feels like a nightmare on the best way possible.
