Netflix’s Ratched spoiler free review
Hello Horror Freaks! Today I’m reviewing the new psychological horror Netflix series Ratched that aired on September 18th, 2020. Directed and Produced by Ryan Murphy and based on the novel of 1962 One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey. The series is a prequel of the novel.
Disclaimer: This is going to be a spoiler free review. I will be skipping plot details and just talking in general.
Ratched is a suspenseful drama series that tells the origin story of asylum nurse Mildred Ratched. In 1947, Mildred arrives in Northern California to seek employment at a leading psychiatric hospital where new and unsettling experiments have begun on the human mind. On a clandestine mission, Mildred presents herself as the perfect image of what a dedicated nurse should be, but the wheels are always turning and as she begins to infiltrate the mental health care system and those within it, Mildred’s stylish exterior belies a growing darkness that has long been smoldering within, revealing that true monsters are made, not born.
Netflix plot
I’m gonna start by saying that Ryan Murphy didn’t disappoint. If you have seen and like his previous work you will probably like this one too. Sarah Paulson acting is brilliant, the sets and costumes are stunning, and kept me on the edge of my seat dying to know what Nurse Ratchet next move would be.
From the very first episode it reminded me of American Horror Story: Asylum and the reason can be obvious. Both Ratched and Asylum are set on metal institutions on times were things like homosexuality was treated as a disease.
As the series continues we see Mildred little by little revealing her true self; a cold heartless nurse. Her real intentions are hard to see as she manipulates everything and everyone around her so her plan can work. But like always things don’t go as expected and Mildred finds herself fighting with her past and childhood traumas that made her the person that she is.
