50 years later Leatherface is back. After years of waiting a new alternate sequel of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) has arrived on Netflix with a story co-wroted by Fede Álvarez (Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe) y Rodo Sayagues (Don’t Breathe 2).

This new film becomes the ninth on the franchise and the first one to bring back the final girl Sally Hardesty, the only survivor of the first film. Originally portrayed by Marilyn Burns, who passed away in 2014, the character is brought back by Olwen Fouéré.

Influencers looking to breathe new life into a Texas ghost town encounter Leatherface, the legendary killer who wears a mask of human skin.

Official plot

Legendary Entertainment produced the movie after Lionsgate lost the rights of the franchise in 2018. Originally intended to make five sequels after the release of Leatherface (2017) they lost the rights for the delayed release. The filming began on Bulgaria in August 2020 and was announced on December 3, 2021 that Netflix would be the distributor and the release date would be February 18, 2022.

My opinion

I kept my expectations low after watching the official trailer and it was for the best. With one hour and twenty minutes of length is not going to be surprise to anyone that the story is fast paced. The story is simple and straight to the point but is incapable of creating an atmosphere of tension and fear. Instead you will find yourself knowing what the next move will be, who will die and who will survive. Predictable? Yes, but at the end is a slasher movie and we all know how those work.

Still, the gore and killing scenes are fun to watch. A lot of blood and a decent amount of deaths are enough to fill some of the fans expectations. But, I see a wave of discomfort and complains coming about the obvious social commentary on the movie. From the first five minutes the movie makes it very clear, this only justifies the personalities of some characters and nothing else. This a slasher that some will love and others will hate. It’s a fun watch but nothing more, just another sequel on the franchise. About Sally coming back I will only say that she deserved better.
