Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Every family has secrets. Going back to the 19th century this Shudder original folk horror movie will remind you the consequences of not following the religious believes of the time. The Last Thing Mary Saw is directed by Edoardo Vitaletti with Stefanie Scott on the leading role.

Winter, 1843. A young woman is under investigation following the mysterious death of her family’s matriarch. Her recollection of the events sheds new light on the ageless forces behind the tragedy.

Official plot

The cast includes Isabelle Fuhrman (Orphan) as Eleanor, Rory Culkin (Scream 4) as Rupert, and Judith Roberts (Dead Silence) as Constance/ Matriarch

My opinion

This film is a slow burn in every meaning of the word. But, is not a bad thing. With one hour and twenty minutes of running time the film tells the story tru Mary (Stefanie Scott). She’s been held for interrogation because of the horrible events that her family suffered after the death of Constance, the matriarch.

Folk horror has a very particular way of being made. The particular way of speaking, the music, the costume, setting, and family roles are combined to tell this horror story. Not an predictable movie but the twist that takes to long to happen as it everything gets solved on the last five minutes.

Convincing acting by Scott and Furman, with a small appearance of Rory Culkin but still memorable. A family that deserved their destiny with a tragic ending that was written long ago. You can stream The Last Thing Mary Saw now on Shudder.
