Rating: 2 out of 5.

Rob Zombie’s first PG film has arrived to Netflix. The Munsters is an American comedy horror film written, directed, and produced by Zombie. Based on the 60s sitcom of the same name the story takes place before the events of the series serving as a prequel or origin story of the characters. It was released on Netflix on September 27, 2022 and also is available on Blu-ray and DVD.

Lily is a typical 150-year-old lovelorn vampire who’s looking for the man of her nightmares — until she lays her eyes on Herman, a 7-foot-tall green experiment with a heart of gold. It’s love at first shock as these two ghouls fall fangs over feet for each other in a Transylvanian romance. Unfortunately, it’s not all smooth sailing in the cemetery as Lily’s father has other plans for his beloved daughter’s future, and they don’t involve her new bumbling beau.

Official plot

The cast includes The film stars Jeff Daniel Phillips as Herman Munster, Sheri Moon Zombie as Lily Munster, Daniel Roebuck as Grampa Munster, Sylvester McCoy as Igor and Richard Brake as Dr. Henry Augustus Wolfgang. The filming took place in Budapest, Hungary during the summer of 2021.

My opinion

Back when the official trailer came out the general opinion was that the film didn’t looked good but after watching it I can say that is not true. While the film is far from being excellent is not as bad as the trailer made it look. But, is important to clarify that unfortunately this new take of The Munsters family can be consider only decent.

The positive aspect of the film are the costumes, sets, and ending credits that recreate the opening credits of the original series. Since the film is on color, while the series is on black and white, it helps to appreciate the details in the costumes and sets. The film is able to emulate the feeling of watching a 60s sitcom. But after all of that there’s nothing good else to say about it.

The biggest downside of the film is the running time. It’s 1 hour and 49 minutes for a story that easily could have been done in 1 hour and 20 minutes or even less. This detail turns the film boring and a long torture. Another negative aspect is the humor, that is expected but is not as good as the one from the series that made it so enjoyable and fun. This film is a huge miss from Rob Zombie, who is a huge fan of the series. I don’t doubt that he did this project with enthusiasm and good intentions but sadly it wasn’t executed properly.
