My Opinion
After being diagnosed with cancer, Laura suffers a breakup. Trying to move on with her life after overcoming the disease, Laura realizes that a grumpy but charming monster lives in her closet. What begins as a difficult coexistence soon turns into a beautiful friendship and a loving relationship.
Based on the 2019 short film of the same name, Your Monster is a charming romantic horror comedy. Perfect for those who enjoy romantic comedies and also want to watch something suitable for the Halloween season. The comic tone of the film is sealed from the beginning, never disappearing while balancing with the romantic aspect of the story. Melissa Barrera steals the spotlight again, showing not only her talent as an actress but also as a singer. This is not the first production with musical numbers in which Melissa participates, and making it clear that Your Monster is not a musical, it does have original songs performed by the cast throughout the film.
Some aspects of the plot can be predictable, it splits into two parts, showing how Laura’s relationship with the monster evolves and her attempt to continue her career as a Broadway actress in her ex-boyfriend’s production that she helped create. But that doesn’t mean you won’t have a good time even if you can predict where the movie is going. It’s an easy to follow story and the romance between a human and a monster may remind you of The Beauty and the Beast (1991) or this year’s release “Lisa Frankenstein (2024). If you are a fan of either or both of those productions, you will enjoy this one without any problems. The mix of comedy, love, rage, horror and blood make this film an enjoyable and charming experience that you should not miss.
