Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

A marriage can have secrets, but once is over they come to light. The Night House is the latest film of David Bruckner and has Rebecca Hall as the lead of this ghost story.

Too many secrets

Reeling from the unexpected death of her husband, Beth is left alone in the lakeside home he built for her. She tries as best as she can to keep it together—but then the dreams come. Disturbing visions of a presence in the house call to her, beckoning with a ghostly allure, but the harsh light of day washes away any proof of a haunting. Against the advice of her friends, she begins digging into his belongings, yearning for answers. What she finds are secrets both strange and terrible and a mystery she is determined to resolve.

Official plot

My opinion

A brilliant ghost story with a brilliant protagonist. Rebecca Hall did an amazing job portraying Beth and her grieving after her husband suicide. She carries the film on her shoulder, without her the film wouldn’t be that memorable.

The film is able to give a good use to clichés on ghost stories like door opening and closing alone and optical illusion. 1 hour and 50 minutes of one of the best horror movies of the year.
